Pilates

The Pilates exercises were developed in the 1940s by Joseph Pilates who used similar movements and exercises to rehabilitate Second World War soldiers. Later this technique was used for injured dancers and it is from here that the Pilates programs practiced today began.

Pilates is a targeted set of exercises that involves training muscles to improve posture and alignment, by focusing on core strength.

Why Pilates?

When muscles are weak they make compensations for each other which lead to instability and injury. If posture is bad, then lower back and hips will adjust themselves accordingly which means they are not aligned to promote optimum spinal movement.

Pilates heightens the body’s awareness to perform movements in a way which improves overall agility, flexibility and strength, while helping the body to work at its optimal level all the time.

GSLS Pty. Ltd. Pilates programs are conducted by physiotherapists trained in the Pilates method. Following an initial assessment, a series of exercises involving floor and equipment are drawn up. Mat exercises focus on using gravity and body weight to create resistance. Equipment, based on the Joseph Pilates design are employed at GSLS to allow people to do the pilates moves using a pulley-system of resistance.

Benefits

Pilates increases muscle tone, strength, flexibility while improving overall mobility and precision when moving. It also enables participants to focus on breathing for improving circulation and stress relief. A great health and wellbeing program.

Pilates is excellent for people with injuries, weak muscles and particularly bad posture, by encouraging problem areas to be strengthened in a relaxed and low impact way.

People with serious injuries can be confident that all programs are strictly monitored by our trained physiotherapists.

Pregnant women should advise their doctor before proceeding.
